While in the Middle East, Steve conceived, developed and organized the first-ever ultra distance trail race across the deserts of Qatar. Ultra Trail Qatar was designed as a community event to encourage all sections of the country’s diverse socio-economic population to come together in a solidarity run. A series of shorter events over the winter months, culminated in a grand finale 50km run. All support was voluntary, with runners’ friends and family giving their time to man aid stations. These pop-up events were highly successful in introducing over 80 different people of more than 30 different nationalities to the joy of trail running.
