Frequently Asked Questions

About your trip

Frequently asked questions and guidance about our holidays. If there’s anything else you’d like to find out about then please do contact us.

How it works

All our runs/ hikes are guided and fully supported. We will walk or run with you to ensure that you know where you are going. Plus, this gives us the opportunity to point out some of the historic sites, and flora and fauna we’ll pass by. For example, Moclín has several hidden sites of interest including Neolithic cave paintings!

Availability

We run all year round. Andalusia is a mountainous region, and Moclín is just above mountain elevation, this makes for great running in the spring and autumn months. April to June and September to October are perfect.

July and August can be hot – but if you want desert-like training temperatures this is the time to get out here and experience some warmer weather of up to 40C. We’ll make sure you are well looked after and hydrated with early morning or evening runs if very hot weather is forecast. Trust us – these temps are not as challenging as you’d find in the Middle East but enough to give you a taster of what to expect.

Contrary to popular belief, it does get cold in Spain. We do occasionally get some snow in January and February and it can be cold. The available daylight hours for outdoor activities are also shorter but if you’re up for some more challenging conditions before settling down in front of a roaring fire, we’re happy to run with you.

How difficult are the runs?

Trails vary in difficulty so we choose the runs based on your personal capabilities and goals. We run over a variety of surfaces but try to keep off road as much as possible. All runs include some uphill but we go at the pace you feel comfortable with.

How fit do I need to be?

To enable you to get the most out of your visit, we’d suggest that you are able to run at least 10km in a single effort. We do try to match those of similar abilities where necessary and may split groups to ensure everyone has an enjoyable day.

Can I run on the road with you?

While we enjoy trail, we also welcome road-runners. Local roads are virtually traffic free and the views stunning – you never know we may even tempt you off piste. While some of the trails we run are more technical, the majority are straightforward and can be tackled in road shoes (your treads just get worn away more quickly and you may have to go steadier).

All runs/ hikes do involve some hills, but we can use these to your advantage to help you to get fitter.

If you seriously want to improve your road half marathon and marathon times on the flat, then we advocate our local 5km hill climb. This lung buster ends a jolly 20km-ish trot out or can be incorporated into reps for added strength. Don’t just take our word for it, several Granada cycle clubs venture up here on a regular basis for training reps. They are an amicable crew, but think we are totally bonkers running, albeit slowly, up ‘the mountain’.

Travel insurance

It is a requirement of booking with Ultra Trail Spain that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activities you are doing and offers appropriate medical care.

Kit list

We’ll send out a recommended kit list when your booking is confirmed; it includes standard running or walking gear such as suitable footwear, hydration system, and warm clothing and waterproof clothes for cooler months.

Water and basic refreshments (seasonal fruits and nuts) are provided at scheduled stops on the routes. You will need to provide your own extra sports nutrition, (gels etc) if you use them, as we cannot guarantee the availability of all brands in Spain.

When should I book?

We’d suggest booking as soon as your plans are confirmed. Ultra Trail Spain is only able to offer a certain amount of days running/ hiking a year.

What happens if I’m unable to complete a run/ walk?

We’ll transport you from a scheduled water stop back to your accommodation.

Other activities

Moclín, and the surrounding area, is an adventure-lovers playground. There are excellent road cycling, mountain biking, caving, kayaking and climbing opportunities in the area. We are happy to facilitate these. If you are interested please let us know and we can incorporate into your visit. (Additional cost may be involved).
